The Superb Qualities of Alpaca Fiber

You might wonder, as we did, what makes alpaca fiber unique from other fibers. We asked breeders, and researched alpaca fiber, but it wasn¹t until we placed our hands on an alpaca and wore our first pair of alpaca socks that we felt and understood the difference.

Selective breeding has created alpacas with rich fleece as soft as cashmere, but lighter, warmer, and stronger than wool. It is produced in approximately 22 natural colors with many variations and blends. This broad spectrum of color provides the fiber artist with endless opportunities for design.

Unlike wool, alpaca fiber does not have an itchy feeling to it (prickle factor). It is an exquisite fiber for clothing and is used to create luxury garments, like wedding gowns, as well as mittens, scarves, and outer garments. Home furnishings such as rugs and pillow covers can be made from alpaca fiber, even toys, ie., stuffed animals, along with an array of other items.

The luxurious fiber of alpacas was once reserved for Incan Royalty. Today, this versatile fiber is enjoyed by spinners and weavers from around the world. The market for alpaca fiber is growing in leaps and bounds as more and more people experience the soft feel of alpaca against their skin and witness first hand it¹s superior natural qualities.
